The first words on Laurie Lehman's website are "It's a good day to paint!"
Whether en plein air or in studio, she says, it is always a good day to paint. Painting, she says, is where she finds her energy and balance. "There is beauty all about, if we choose to seek it." The joy she found at an art camp when she was 17 has stayed with her ever since. She still has the painting she made while sitting on the rocks of the shore with the sun shining on a group of young artists. Laurie is a member artist of Flat River Gallery and Framing, Great Lakes Plein Air Painters Association, Plein Artists of West Michigan and Grand Valley Artists. She paints in oil, pastel, watercolor and acrylic. At this retreat, Laurie will discuss choosing what to paint, composing with large shapes, judging value relationships, selecting colors, treating edges and filling in the final details. She'll also talk about limiting the weight of what you carry outdoors, arranging paint on the palette and determining color temperatures. Laurie will paint a demo on location, then get participants set up so they can paint in the afternoon of the first day. All instruction and demonstrations will be with oil paint, but other mediums are welcome as long as students are familiar with their medium of choice. Learn more about Laurie at LaurieLehmanartist.com. Note: No hiking is involved in this workshop; locations are just a few steps from parking. All levels of experience. Class limit is 12 students. |
Class Supply List
If you are an experienced painter, bring what you are comfortable with using. The suggestions below include warm and cool shades of colors, but you may substitute your own favorites.
Paint
There are many quality oil paints available. I use mostly Gamblin but also Holbein and Michael Harding. If you use water soluble oils, I recommend Duo.
Yellow: Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Yellow Ochre
Red: Warm: Cadmium Red Medium or Napthol Scarlet
Cool: Alizarin Permanent or Quinacridone Red
Blue: Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue
Brown: Burnt Sienna or Transparent Oxide Red (Transparent Earth Red)
White: Titanium White
Extra colors: Cadmium Orange, Dioxazine Purple, Viridian
Canvas panels
Centurion oil primed panels, or Centurion all-media primed panels. These are reasonably priced and can be purchased online from jerrysartarama.com. Cheap or discount panels often soak up too much paint. I also use gessoboard by Ampersand; these are a bit smoother with much less tooth.
Bring sizes 8x10,” 9x12,” 11x14” or similar. Bigger dimensions make it hard to finish in one session.
Brushes
Bring long-handle synthetic brushes, like Bristlon by Silverbrush or Ivory by Rosemary and Co.
Long filbert or flat, size 2
Long flats or flats, sizes 6 and 8
Softer flats such as Ruby Satin by Silverbrush, sizes 2 and 6
Round brush, size 2 or 4
Optional: script or rigger for fine lines or signing a painting
Other
Palette knife
Medium: Gamblin solvent free gel
Odorless mineral spirits by Gamsol
Paper towels, gloves, Murphy’s oil soap or Dawn dish soap for cleaning brushes, small bag for trash, sunscreen, insect repellent, hat. Wet paint holder or carrier.
Plein air easel: I use Open Box M panel holder mounted on a tripod. Another popular one is EasyL .
