Laura Whitesides Host, from Birmingham, Michigan, earned her BFA in painting and ceramics from the University of Michigan’s Architecture and Design College. Laura paints in water media and does monotype printmaking. Her work is exhibited in numerous juried competitions, in group shows and in solo exhibits.
Laura is a founding member of Lawrence St. Gallery, now in its 37th year of business, in Ferndale. She has been a board member of the Michigan Water Color Society for many years, a board member of the Birmingham Society of Women Painters and a instructor at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center since 1993. This year's experiment involves masking fluid and different kinds of paint and two surfaces, one on black gesso and one on pure white watercolor paper to start. We will paint on the black surface with opaque values by adding white gouache with watercolors or high flow acrylics ( I have some for you to try). The lines will be black on the opaque paint surface. On the white paper, we will draw lines with the masking fluid and then start dripping, dropping transparent washes. Shapes will start to appear, then more transparent washes will go on top of the base. Many layers later, we will remove the masking fluid to reveal white lines! I like the differences and contrasts that appear on the different surfaces and the variation of opaque and transparent paint. We can paint objects and abstract designs. I’ll bring some coloring books for adults for some subject matter or you can bring your sketch books (you should anyway!) To learn more about Laura's work, visit laurawhitesideshost.com. All levels of experience. Class limit is 12 students. |

Finally, gather images such as flowers, natural items (trees, animals, plants, etc.) or something that interests you and print them out on copy paper. That would be helpful! |
