The Alcona Arts Retreat opens each year with a party so that students can meet each other and their instructors, and catch up with friends from earlier years.
Instructor Laura Whitesides Host led a class in experimental watercolor this year.
Colleen Wilson, left, will teach how to make silver jewelry by carving, molding and otherwise manipulating metal clay that fires overnight in a kiln.
Joan Schwartz (not shown) led a class in mosaics in which each student created an individual plaque.
Student Carol Preuss shows her partially completed still life from Helen Kleczynski's pastels class.
Richard Jordan's all-media plein air class painted Beaver Lake, on the Lost Lake Woods Club property.
The retreat concluded with another party, this time a cookout by the lake down the hill from the lodge where lessons are held.

7 p.m. Thursday: Wine and hors d'oeuvres party
9 a.m.- noon and 1:30-4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday: Classes meet
9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday: Classes meet
1:15 p.m. Sunday: Farewell cookout by the lake

Five prominent Michigan artists and teachers led students in three-day art workshops held simultaneously in beautiful Alcona County in northeast Michigan. This retreat offers not only the teachers’ instruction, but also a chance to make new creative friends among the participants and the opportunity to celebrate the end of summer with a nearby mini-vacation.

The setting is pure Up North: a lakeside lodge with views of the forest, deer and other wildlife wandering by, a quiet and calm atmosphere perfect for creative work.

Each workshop ran for five sessions, two 3-hour sessions on both Friday and Saturday, and a final 4-hour session on Sunday morning. Other events during the weekend included the opening wine, beer and hors d’ oeuvres party on Thursday night, and a farewell lakeside cookout on Sunday afternoon before it was time to head home and into autumn.
