Cona, the Therapy Dog

Alcona Community Schools needs your help to start a therapy dog program for elementary students. Therapy dogs help students to increase reading skills by listening uncritically to struggling readers, and they help calm students in danger of losing control of themselves.

Alcona County is a rural community located in Northern Michigan with Lake Huron on the eastern border, and Huron National Forest on the western border. The elementary school has just over 300 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The majority of students are from low-income households and are considered high risk.

The school and Inspiration Alcona have already raised enough money to purchase the golden retreiver puppy, named Cona. (Dogs in the photos and videos here are not the real Cona; but that's the actual dog on the website home page.) Your contributions will go towards training Cona, creating a place for Cona at the school, acquiring student materials for interacting with him, and the maintenance and care of the dog.

Inspiration Alcona is working closely with Alcona Community Schools to get the program funded. Inspiration Alcona passes all donations directly to Alcona Community Schools without charging any fee.

Checks, of course, do not incur fees. PayPal and the credit card option through PayPal do charge a fee of about 2.2 percent per online donation, but Inspiration Alcona adds money to offset the fee so that your whole donation goes to the project.
